So Heroes … I’m still not happy about this eclipse mini-arc. It doesn’t really make sense that their powers turned off during the eclipse. It doesn’t really make sense that the eclipse lasted as long as it did. It doesn’t really make sense that some things could happen as quickly as they did in the context of this timeframe. It was not a bad conclusion to the arc – there were some scenes that I really enjoyed – but I hope in the long run this mini-arc will end up glossed over for a return to better drama.
I’ve already moaned about the senselessness of the eclipse turning off their powers (if there were a correlation, why doesn’t this happen with every eclipse – the older heroes should have experienced this a few times already). What bothers me more here is the timescale. Obviously many of these story arcs were concurrent, but even so, each one occupied at least 30 minutes of air time and an eclipse usually lasts around 7 (Wikipedia helped with this one). One of the arcs that bugged me the most was Mohinder’s – he went from covered in lesions to cured and flawless and then right back to lesion-covered again. If he reverted to normal, he should have taken time to heal. And even when he triggered his abilities originally, he didn’t have the scales so quickly – it took at least a day or two. There was a similar arc issue with Daphne directly in tonight’s episode: per her story in this episode, after the last eclipse her legs got better so she could walk normally, then she could run, then she could run fast. Tonight she went from hunched over to speedster in a moment.
The arcs that I enjoyed the most, though were Hiro’s and Peter’s. Hiro as a 10-year-old trapped in his adult self was great – especially in his much more care free use of his powers (e.g., his fun in the bowling alley last week and his handling of the situation at the Bennet house tonight). If only he were so uninhibited all the time. Hopefully they will try to retain some of that after his memories are returned. With Peter, it was great to see his being a real hero again. While others around him waffled over the kinks in their plans (*cough* nathan *cough*), Peter kept it together and put it on the line when it mattered.
As usual, tonight’s episode left a lot of questions on the table (it wouldn’t be Heroes if it didn’t). For instance: Was HRG telling the truth about Gabriel’s parents? How will Hiro get his memory back and how is going back to the moment of Claire’s bequeathment to HRG going to facilitate that? Did the eclipse give Peter back his powers and if not will he be getting them back soon? Will the lot of our heroes ever realize that both of the Petrelli parents are nuts and need to be taken down? I guess there is only one way to find out.
