I try not to be guilty of it, but it seems like a hard thing to avoid. My wife recenly raised some good questions on this subject. Dispite my upbringing to the contrary, I am a fairly liberally-minded Democrat (which should come as little surprise to any of my regular readers). My wife is similarly so. Appropriate Voting Age: 4?
In this political season, my wife has made a point to keep our 4 1/2 year-old daughter abreast of the high-level details – she is aware that we are soon voting for a new president; she knows who the candidates are; she even has some opinions of her own about what qualities a good president should have (in her words, a president should be able to do anything a mommy can do). Small Town Problems
Smallville has long been a guilty pleasure of mine. It is part of my super hero geek passion – the show is cheesy and a bit flat and predictable, but it is Superman so I forgive it. Every season they do a great job at butchering new facets of the Superman mythos, but not being a purist in such matters, I forgive it. I have not always been alone in this – I’ve known people who also secretly enjoyed this show and we would chat about it occasionally on Fridays, but many of them haven’t been as patient with the show as I. Heroes & Villains
I already feel like a bad fan. I should have had this written last night within an hour after the premier was over. Instead I didn’t even start watching it until it was mostly over (of course I DVRed it and watched from the beginning, I’m not that crazy). It has been a hectic week (month, actually) at work. I didn’t get home from the office last night until around 10. And after watching the 2 hours of Heroes – I opted for the moment to skip the opening red-carpet hour (who needs appetizers with entrees like these?) and I went to bed right after because I had to be at work this morning early for more insanity. SNL: Cold Open Was Solid, Rest Was Luke-Warm
With rumors of an Obama appearance, this Saturday I found myself doing something I can hardly every remember doing – getting excited to watch Saturday Night Live. Sure, I’ve enjoyed it from time to time. I’m as big a fan of sketch comedy as anyone. But never a die-hard fan of the show. But having been watching weeks of telelvision this summer ripe with satirical potential (e.g., the Olympics, the conventions), I’ve been itching to see how the SNL crew might capitalize on some of this. I was initially greeted with some of the political humor that I was thirsting for, but most of the rest of the show turned out to be a bit less pallatable.
